> Whiplash
Whiplash or “neck strain” is defined
as a soft tissue injury to the neck. These injuries
are most commonly sustained in a rear end collision car accident.
When an automobile has a collision and is hit from behind,
the drivers head is often thrown suddenly backward into the
headrest then immediately forward as the car comes to a stop.
This violent series of motions commonly causes injuries to
the soft tissue of the neck region such as: damage to the
intervertebrial discs, tearing of the cervical muscles, and
nerve damage. Since whiplash injuries affect the soft tissues,
the extent of the injury can not often be appreciated without
the aid of CAT scans or MRIs.
Persons suffering from whiplash will often develop
some symptoms within the first few days of the injury.
The severity and type of the symptoms experienced varies greatly
between individuals. Some common symptoms of whiplash are:
neck pain, neck stiffness, dizziness, blurred vision, loss
of memory, loss of concentration, headaches, back pain, shoulder
pain and sleep loss, just to name a few common symptoms of
whiplash.
The symptoms of a whiplash injury often subside within three
months of the car accident with most victims recovering completely.
However, there are some severe cases of whiplash in which
the victim experiences residual symptoms for longer periods
of time.
